Nothing starts a Monday morning quite like a dead battery at 5AM.

The battery is one of those things you don't really think about until it gives you a reason to. In four years of owning the 4Runner, I'd never touched it. It started the truck every morning, never gave me any trouble, and therefore received exactly zero attention from me. Until today. I hopped in to leave for work, turned the key, and was greeted by flickering lights and the dreaded clicking of a battery that had apparently decided Sunday night was its last shift.

Luckily, a few years ago my wife bought me a NEXPOW portable jump pack, and that little thing has saved me more times than I can count. This morning was no exception. I hooked it up, the 4Runner fired immediately, and a quick voltage check confirmed the alternator was charging properly. At that point, I figured maybe I'd left a light on over the weekend or done something else stupid. The truck had been sitting, the battery got low—no big deal. So I drove to work and didn't give it another thought.

Until I needed to leave in the middle of the workday. Click. The jump pack saved me again, but two dead starts in the same day was enough evidence for me. The battery was done.

How Much Battery Do You Want?

I've always found shopping for batteries funny. "Would you like this $50 battery that may last until Thursday, or would you like to spend $500 on something that might make it a few years?" The outgoing battery was actually a Super Start Premium, and I can't complain about its service life. The sticker showed 10/20, meaning it had survived almost six years—and four of those were under my ownership. That's a pretty respectable run. While looking through replacements, though, one battery immediately caught my attention: The Optima RedTop 34R. And suddenly the nostalgia hit. When I was first getting into cars, Optima batteries were the battery to have. You'd pop the hood at a car show, see that red or yellow top sitting in the engine bay, and immediately know someone had spent some money. I always wanted one. So I bought the Optima.

In my defense, it wasn't entirely an emotional purchase. The specs were a nice upgrade, with considerably more cranking power than the old battery. The difference was immediately noticeable too—the 4Runner doesn't have that slightly lazy crank anymore. Turn the key and it fires immediately. Plus, the red top matches the Dobinsons suspension, calipers, tow hooks, and all the other red accents I've slowly added. That's important too…Probably…

of course I managed to encounter a fitment issue while replacing a battery…

I drove straight to O'Reilly Auto Parts after work, bought the Optima, and decided to install it right there in the parking lot so I could hand them the old battery and be done with it. It's a battery, Two terminals and a hold-down bracket. Surely even I couldn't turn this into a project.

At some point, the factory hold-down bracket had been bent to accommodate the taller battery. The shorter Optima exposed that modification pretty quickly, so I had to reshape the bracket before it would properly secure the new battery. Once that was sorted, everything fit securely and I took the opportunity to clean up and better secure the ground wire for my under-hood LEDs while I was already there.

With everything tightened down, I turned the key. No hesitation. No lazy crank. Just an immediate startup.
