Master & Wheel Cylinder Replacement
Last time I cleaned up the engine bay, I noticed the master cylinder looked... well, old. The plastic reservoir had yellowed with age, and I made a mental note to replace it someday. Then the truck started dropping hints. Sitting at stoplights, I'd slowly creep forward as the brake pedal continued sinking toward the floor. Nothing gets your attention quite like realizing your brakes are…breaking. Between that and the questionable-looking master cylinder, I figured it was time. As usual, the "might as well" bug bit me pretty hard.
Sure, there are plenty of aftermarket master cylinders available for half the price, but there are two things you should know:
I hate working on brakes.
They're kind of important.
So I ordered a genuine Toyota master cylinder, new rear wheel cylinders, fresh gaskets, and while I was already spending money... why not repaint the front calipers? I'd noticed the paint on my Tundra calipers starting to peel a while back, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to freshen everything up. On a morning with roughly 100% humidity and enough heat to make me question my life choices, I got started.
I figured painting the calipers first would give them time to cure while I tackled the hydraulic work. After pulling the wheels, I attacked years of old paint and grime with a wire brush, scraper, and finally a powered wire wheel. Once everything was cleaned down to solid material, I soaked the calipers with brake cleaner and got ready for paint.
I went with G2 epoxy paint. It's expensive—about six times the cost of a can of spray paint—but I've used it twice before and the results have always been worth it. It's a two-part epoxy that self-levels beautifully, cures quickly, and stands up to heat far better than traditional caliper paint. I brushed on the first coat, took a much-needed water break while bench bleeding the new master cylinder, then came back for the second coat.
Since the kit is intended to paint all four calipers and I only needed enough for the fronts, I still had plenty of epoxy left over. Rather than throw it away, I painted the front recovery hooks. Honestly... I wish I'd done that years ago. The red matches the Dobinsons IMS suspension perfectly and adds just enough color without looking overdone. With the paint curing and the wheels carefully reinstalled, I moved on to the main event.
After sucking the old brake fluid out of the reservoir, I immediately found what I suspected was causing my problems. Floating in the fluid were chunks of what looked like deteriorated seal material. Definitely not something you want circulating through your brake system. Since the new master cylinder had already been bench bled, replacing it was surprisingly straightforward. Two brake lines, two mounting nuts, swap the gasket, bolt everything together, and refill it with fresh Liqui Moly DOT 4 fluid.
Next came the rear wheel cylinders. I'll admit, this part had me a little nervous. With over 180,000 miles on the truck, I wasn't convinced the brake drums were going to cooperate. To my surprise, a few taps with a rubber mallet and a quick adjustment of the brake shoes were all it took. Once the drums came off, everything actually looked pretty good. Plenty of brake shoe material remained, and there weren't any obvious leaks. Still...Since I was already bleeding the system—and because I absolutely hate working on brakes—I wasn't about to risk having to come back in here later for a leaking wheel cylinder. Two bolts and one brake line later, both cylinders were out. The only hiccup of the day came during installation. Whether it was the heat or just plain exhaustion, I managed to snap one of the retaining bolts on the driver's side. Turns out those little guys require almost no torque at all, and I definitely exceeded "almost none." Fortunately, the wheel cylinder is still securely clamped in place, and the broken bolt can be accessed from the back side. I'll replace it the next time I place a Toyota parts order.
With everything installed, it was time to bleed the entire system. I found a pretty slick little one-man bleeding hose with a built-in rubber adapter that sealed nicely against the bleeder screw. Zip-tied to a bottle, it made the whole process surprisingly painless and let me flush all four corners without needing an assistant.
Then came my least favorite part. The test drive. I have an irrational fear of brake work because, by the time you discover something isn't right...it's usually too late. Ask me sometime about the '72 F-100 I rebuilt that decided intersections were merely suggestions. Thankfully, this test drive went much better.
After a small adjustment to the rear drum brakes, everything felt great. The pedal was firm, braking was straight, and just to satisfy my curiosity, I checked rotor and drum temperatures with the infrared thermometer afterward. Both sides were within about 5°F of each other, which is exactly what I wanted to see.
Another critical component replaced with genuine Toyota parts. At this point, I'm starting to wonder how much of this truck is actually still from 1999.
